Social Investment
In any society, there are several disadvantaged individuals and families. These people need assistance in accessing basic human requirements including decent housing, clean and safe water, healthcare, employment and education. While the government each year sets aside a significant part of the national budget towards poverty alleviation programs, it cannot work alone for it needs partners to help it to achieve its aims.
In 2008 the SBUL, continued to dedicate a percentage of its earnings to assisting the community through various programmes and projects and below are some of the key
initiatives undertaken during the year:
Health and Awareness
SBUL is committed to providing a hand up to the disadvantaged in our society; to this end a donation of an assortment of equipment was made to Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) casualties to rehabilitate them into normal life. The equipment to be used by soldiers who were disabled in the course of duty included auxiliary clutches, shoe making materials e.g. leather uppers, elbows and eyelets among others. The equipment was handed over to the UPDF Commander of Land Forces Lt Gen Katumba Wamala who lauded the bank for making a real difference to the life of the beneficiaries. Other high ranking UPDF officers at the UPDF Mubende Rehabilitation Centre were present at the hand over ceremony.
In addition, a donation of five sewing machines and a variety of tailoring materials was made to the Crisis Pregnancy and Counselling Centre (CPCC). The centre provides temporary shelter to young teenage mothers who become pregnant while at school and often find themselves rejected by both their parents and the fathers of their unborn children as
well as homeless due to their plight.
Regional Community Projects
Over the years staff from various branches and business units have pooled together a portion of their earnings and
made donations to a selected charity or worthy project. The Bank supplements these efforts by matching the funds collected by staff.
• Central Region
A shed was constructed to accommodate 300 patients at Mityana hospital where HIV/AIDS patients take shelter before they receive medication and counselling at the
hospital. The shed was built with cash contributions from Stanbic Bank staff in Central Region, which was topped up by the Bank. Previously patients were subject to the vagaries of nature with only trees for shelter.
• Western Region
In western Uganda the regional team added value to educational standards by donatingtextbooks to Nyabani Secondary School in Kamwenge district. A number of Mathematics and English textbooks were handed over to rural Nyabani Secondary school in Kamwenge district The gesture was appreciated by the schools’ administration
as the donation addressed the need for good quality educational resource materials to complement the effort of their teaching staff.
• Annual Charity Run
Every year, SBUL partners with the International School of Uganda (ISU) to raise funds that benefit other charitable organisations. In 2008 the beneficiaries included: Banunule Primary School in Kisugu, Namuwongo, Mutesa One Primary School in Kayunga, Wakiso town, Christian Missionary Fellowship in Kyungu, Mukono district and Abanunule Orphanage at Zana. Over 800 children benefitted from this donation. This run is organised and hosted by the ISU Parents Teacher Association.
• HIV/AIDS
At a colourful ceremony in July 2008, Standard Bank, which trades as Stanbic Bank in Uganda, won the prestigious 2008 AfriCom.Net annual award for Excellence in HIV and AIDS Communication in Africa. The award recognises the work Standard Bank’s “Wellness Champions” have done in HIV/ AIDS training, raising awareness and offering HIV/AIDS advisory support to staff and the broader community. The bank has 85 trained peer educators called Wellness Champions responsible for implementing HIV/AIDS
education as well as general health management activities for staff as well the community where we operate.
• Other Activities
The annual celebration of Martyrs Day attracts pilgrims from all over the world to the national monument. Over time the facilities had become run down, our donation of 100 bags of cement to support repair works at the Uganda Martyrs Shrine, Namugongo was timely to ensure that the shrine was restored to its past glory and to preserve this national monument held dear by Ugandans
